Fagaceae (beech or oak family) Quercus

Quercus oblongifolia Mexican blue oak

Southwestern U.S. to N. Mexico

Closely related to Quercus engelmannii from Southern California, with elliptical leaves of almost breathtaking symmetry, this is the latest bluish-leaved oak to set root on campus. A young tree planted in 2026 stands just west of the bicycle parking on the northeast corner of Levin Field.

The species remains rare in the area, though a specimen grown from seed collected at the base of Mount Lemmon in Arizona can be seen at 10335 North Tantau Avenue in Cupertino, on the berm southeast of the building.
