Magnolia virginiana
sweet bay magnolia
Texas to Eastern US, Cuba
A small tree that has fragrant white flowers. One grew on the south side of Green Library across from Koret Court, and two were near the northeast corner of Dinkelspiel Auditorium. All were planted March, 2003.
The Green library tree was removed in 2005. One of the Dinkelspiel specimens remained prior to the 2008 White Plaza renovation, but ended up being removed as well.
About this Entry: John Rawlings authored the text of this entry ca. 2005, based on locations in the tree maps in the book Trees of Stanford and Environs, by Ronald Bracewell, published 2005. Green removal and one Dinkelspiel removed noted (ca. 2008, JR). Noted that the last specimen was removed at some point after that (Feb 2020, SP).
