Juniperus deppeana alligator juniper
Southwest United States to Mexico
Handsome checkered bark evocative of alligator hide distinguishes this medium-sized tree. Campus’s only specimen, leaning and with multiple ascending branches, holds the honor of state champion: in 2013 it was 25 feet tall, with a trunk circumference of 65 inches and a crown spread of 32 feet. See it on the north side of Arboretum Road, exactly midway between Campus Drive and Quarry Road, on the north edge of the path (map pin).
